Civita is a hamlet of the municipality of Bagnoregio, located in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio, and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Civita di Bagnoregio is also known as "the dying city" due to the progressive erosion of the land on the hill and in the surrounding valley, which has created characteristic badlands.

Currently, Civita is inhabited by only seven people and can only be reached via a long pedestrian bridge, which, on some occasions, can also be used by bicycles and motorcycles, if necessary for the residents. The vegetation of the hills is characterized by clayey soil, which means that much of the terrain remains uncovered, even during the spring.

The fauna of Civita includes typical animals of the upper Lazio region, such as hedgehogs, porcupines, weasels, martens, and wild boars, while in the summer, you can spot the turtledove and the hoopoe. It is interesting to note the numerous presence of abandoned cats in the hamlet, which is connected to the gradual abandonment of the environment by humans.

Civita was founded 2,500 years ago by the Etruscans along one of the main roads that connected the Tiber River to Lake Bolsena. The urban structure of Civita is of Etruscan origin, while the architecture dates mainly from the medieval or Renaissance period. There are numerous testimonies of the Etruscan era, including the so-called "Bucaione," a large tunnel that provides direct access from the town to the valley of the badlands.

However, many remains have been damaged by landslides over the centuries, and the Romans tried to remedy this in 265 B.C. through works to contain rainwater and torrents, which had already been initiated by the Etruscans.

Civita offers several places of historical interest, and since 2005, the badlands have been proposed as a site of community interest.
