Civita di Bagnoregio, UNESCO Candidacy Dossier Submitted

Mayor Profili: "A Consecration and Strengthening of a Journey that Has Made Us a Reference Point in a Vast Area"

Over Two Hundred Pages to Portray the Uniqueness of a Landscape Born of Nature and Human Endeavor

The cultural landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio aspires to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. "In these hours, the Lazio Region has sent the nomination dossier to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, which we have prepared over these months for UNESCO's preliminary completeness verification," Mayor Luca Profili explains.

"If all goes well, we will be ready for the final presentation. We are living in an extraordinary, historic period for Bagnoregio and the entire Tuscia region, which we believe we represent to the fullest. It's a day to be remembered for all of us."

The 242-page dossier aims to highlight the distinctiveness of the location as an example of the intersection between nature and humanity marked by resilience. The candidacy of the Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio holds significance for an entire region overlooking the Valle dei Calanchi.

It seeks to be both the consecration and enhancement of a journey that has led Civita to become a reference point in a vast area in recent years. A reference point and an embodiment of sustainable tourism, embracing traditional hospitality, and pursuing development that fully respects the environment, with an essential focus on preserving the most authentic traits of the place: landscape, historical and artistic assets, culinary and artisan heritage.

Over the centuries, human hands have met nature here, forging a pact based on delicate balances and reverence. Civita has defied all eras, even the contemporary one. Evolving from a place destined for abandonment, it has transformed into a place of potential futures. This holds true for new generations, tasked with the challenge of welcoming the world into their homes. Destined to guard a unique identity and make it accessible to those who move slowly to truly see and listen.

"The UNESCO nomination," Mayor Profili explains, "sets before us a path filled with challenges and motivations to enhance our tourism reception and render the flows sustainable. There are numerous objectives we are called to achieve in the coming years on the service front. Thanks to the efforts of Casa Civita, we are journeying on many significant fronts, believing that what has been accomplished so far is only the beginning of a grand journey."
