Bagnoregio Welcomes Back the Good Friday Procession: 400 Years of Tradition and Popular Faith

19 Apr 2019

The historic Good Friday procession of Bagnoregio returns, marking one of the oldest events in Lazio, Italy. This tradition, passed down through generations for nearly 400 years, remains an unaltered and authentic expression of popular faith. The event is scheduled for Friday, April 19th, at 9:30 PM in the historic center of Bagnoregio.

The procession consists of three main parts: the historical part, the folkloric part, and the religious part. In the historical part, you will witness an authentic historical parade featuring meticulously recreated characters in Roman costumes. The folkloric part will showcase captivating icons carried on shoulders with live flame torches. Finally, in the religious part, the audience will have the opportunity to admire not only the confraternities but also the central figure of the entire event: the wooden sculpture of the Holy Crucifix of Civita Di Bagnoregio.

For the 2019 edition, the Committee for the Good Friday Procession has planned numerous innovations that will allow the audience to interact directly with the spectacle. "Our idea," explains President Giordano Fioco, "is to unite all spectators upon the procession's return, almost making them participants in the event itself, until we reach Piazza Sant'Agostino, where the event will conclude. Here, a solemn farewell will take place, paying homage to the statue of the Holy Crucifix and the Confraternity of Civita. Last year, we also acquired a Roman chariot that will be drawn by a Bagnoregio charioteer. I would like to thank Father Don Marco Petrella, who advises us whenever we encounter difficulties, the municipal administration always by our side, the F.lli Agosti Foundation, the Piero Taruffi Association, all the associations of Bagnoregio, the Italian Red Cross, the confraternities, the many participants who join the procession every year, the various professionals involved in the organization, along with the people of Bagnoregio who contribute significant financial support to this committee. I thank the entire committee I proudly represent, an active committee with a willingness to work, now composed of 80% young people ready to learn the traditions and nuances that make up the folklore, the heritage of this event, bringing new ideas with a focus on those who in the past gave so much to the procession.
