The Geological and Landslide Museum Reopens in Civita di Bagnoregio
Casa Civita and Geo Teverina Collaborate for Revival
Civita di Bagnoregio welcomes the reopening of the Geological and Landslide Museum, a significant venue for exploring various facets of life and the uniqueness of the village suspended above the Valley of Calanchi. A narrative woven with fossils, landslides, and a continuous dialogue between humans and nature awaits visitors as they step into the museum space at Palazzo Alemanni, located on the main square of the village.
Following its closure, the Museum comes back to life through the efforts of the Cultural Association Geo Teverina, working in synergy with Casa Civita to reinvigorate the museum experience and its activities. In adherence to Covid-19 safety measures, access is granted to a limited number of people per time slot, 25 per hour. It is recommended to purchase tickets online (indicating the preferred visiting time) when buying the entrance ticket to the Civita bridge. Alternatively, if there are still available slots within the desired time frame, tickets can also be purchased directly at the ticket office.
Opening Details and Safety Precautions
The Museum reopens on Saturday, June 6th, and remains accessible until September, exclusively on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Visiting hours are from 10 AM to 6 PM, with a break scheduled from 1:30 PM to 2 PM. The entrance fee to the Museum is 3 euros (a reduced price for the entire year 2020 compared to the standard cost of 8 euros).
Delving into Geological History and Resilience
The Museum narrates the tale of resilience in the ongoing dialogue between man and nature in Civita di Bagnoregio. A pivotal stop to comprehend the reasons and intricacies of one of the most captivating places globally. Its various halls unveil the geological history of the region, the ongoing instability processes on the slopes, monitoring and stabilization efforts, as well as historical landslides.
Unraveling the Geological Journey
The experience offers a journey through time: from uncovering the sea of over a million years ago to exploring the volcanoes of the Vulsino District, which with their products have covered a significant part of the Viterbo province. It's a pathway to understanding the constant phenomena occurring across much of Italy (with over half a million recorded landslides), providing access to one of Italy's most astonishing locations. The Museum houses several captivating fossils that engage both young and old.
The Museum's Role and Purpose
The Geological and Landslide Museum in Civita di Bagnoregio serves as a synthesis and showcase of the natural merits of the area between Lake Bolsena and the Valle dei Fiumi Paglia and Tevere. It also functions as a hub for study and interaction for academics, professionals, and enthusiasts in disciplines such as engineering, archaeology, agronomy, and Earth sciences. From applied geology and geomorphology to hydrogeology, stratigraphic geology, volcanology, mineralogy, and paleontology of mollusks and vertebrates. The careful curation of the exhibition within is undertaken by the Geo Teverina Association, ensuring a professional and immersive experience for visitors.
A Nexus of Research and Community
The Museum promotes, coordinates, and contributes to scientific research. It is more than a repository and display of data; it's an active and dynamic reference center for residents, tourists, students, professionals, academics, and researchers. Here, each individual can enhance their aptitude and embrace a plethora of opportunities.
