Living Nativity Scene of Civita di Bagnoregio, the Nativity in a small Bethlehem suspended over the Calanchi Valley

The Living Nativity Scene of Civita di Bagnoregio is an emotion to experience at least once in your life. Here time seems to want to give a nice gift and through some magic, which in these parts becomes credible, you really have the feeling of being in the Bethlehem of the year zero.

The Nativity play returns this Saturday 30 December. The next appointments are for January 1st, 6th and 7th. For the third consecutive year the organization is managed by the Italian Red Cross of Bagnoregio and Lubriano which, in synergy with the Municipality, has set itself the objective of raising sufficient funds to make the town cardioprotected and to purchase medical devices and aids from make available to the population.

For some years now, the national and international press has considered Civita one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. And the Living Nativity lives up to the most sophisticated expectations. The ancient village offers a unique setting, which reproduces an uncommon landscape and where time seems to have stopped. An obligatory passage is a bridge, suspended in the void and surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of the Calanchi Valley.

Then the access to the ancient town, built on a tufaceous spur, and the vivid sensation of being in a dream. Ten different scenes which, as in a mosaic, reconstruct the days of Jesus' birth. The Arab souk, the Roman castrum, Herod, the noble residences, the Bedouin tribe, the artisans at work, the wise men, the shepherds, the lazaretto and of course the Nativity. A mix of colours, emotions, beauty.

Every year the proceeds from the Living Nativity are transformed into a project. Two years ago an ambulance was purchased, available to the population of Bagnoregio and the entire Teverina area. Last year a special vehicle allowed the activation of a disabled transport service in Civita. A vehicle that made it possible to break down a formidable architectural barrier of almost 600 metres.
